MailShadow Features

More Bang for Your DR Dollar

One feature sure to stretch your DR budget is the ability MailShadow® gives you to replicate a select subset of mailboxes from a number of different primary Exchange servers to just a single Exchange recovery server. And while traditional DR solutions generally require that you either faithfully replicate every single aspect of your primary Exchange environment or purchase some very expensive SAN equipment, MailShadow doesn’t do that to you. Think this doesn’t add up to some real money? Think again.

But that’s not all, because MailShadow continues to save you money day after day by working to minimize the load on your WAN in a variety of ways. Most significantly, MailShadow transmits transactions only once, whereas traditional file replication solutions transmit the same data multiple times (in the form of both transaction .log files and .edb files, for example). Transaction-specific information for the subset of mailboxes that you’ve chosen to protect is the sum total of what MailShadow passes along.

And MailShadow also delivers recurring savings in the form of reduced administrative overhead. In part, that’s because MailShadow’s software management approach has been designed to be intuitive for Exchange administrators and is entirely consistent with the Active Directory management scheme. It also helps that MailShadow is so easy and safe to use that there’s no need for end-user training.

MailShadow further aids in conserving your precious administrative resources in one very important but subtle way that may at first escape your attention. That is, it uses the Microsoft-approved service account to extract and write transactions, thus averting the need to install any MailShadow software on either your active Exchange servers or your recovery Exchange servers. And why should that make so much of a difference? For one thing, it is not Microsoft’s policy to provide support for non-synchronous Exchange replication solutions. And for another, should you ever have an occasion to call Microsoft Support for help with one of your Exchange servers, you’ll find that you must first yank all such applications off your server before you can even request assistance. And, no, that probably will not make your day.

But not to worry. MailShadow was designed to solve problems for you — not to create them. Don’t you wish more of your applications worked this way?
